Across GetYourGuide, Google, Tripadvisor and Viator, travellers review Rural Roots Tours the same way. They name the guides - Ramon, who founded the company and grew up in Alora, and Rocio, who hosts the winery visit - the groups of no more than 8, and the family bodega in the Guadalhorce Valley where the tasting comes with local tapas. Reviews run in English and Spanish and cover the wine tours, the Caminito del Rey and the Gibraltar and Morocco day trips.
The guides
★★★★★
Ramón was very knowledgeable and made the entire tour genuinely interesting. The wine-making process and the tastings were the highlight of the day.
★★★★★
Ramón made the experience relaxing and pleasurable. His knowledge and love for the village of Álora was exceptional, and the wines were delicious.
★★★★★
Rocío provided a fantastic, almost private tour with incredible views and even better wine. The aging cellar was beautiful and the tasting with tapas was top-tier.
★★★★★
Rocío explica muy bien los matices de los vinos durante la cata y es encantadora.
★★★★★
Beautiful visit with Ramón — passionate about the vineyards and about Álora. The food and the wines were excellent.
The wine and the bodega
★★★★★
Maravillosa experiencia inmersiva: visitamos el viñedo, participamos en la vendimia y la cata es fantástica. Vinos espectaculares.
★★★★★
A wonderful winery tour with delicious wine — they make an unusual Cabernet Franc. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and even the dog, Toby, was a gem.
★★★★★
Enjoyed the tour with Ramón — interesting explanations about wine-making and about Álora. The highlight was the wine tasting with tapas.
★★★★★
Ramón was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and the wine and tapas were very nice. A relaxed afternoon, not rushed.
Álora and the countryside
★★★★★
A great trip with a really knowledgeable guide. Getting to see rural Spain, with almost no other tourists around, was the best part.
★★★★★
Being involved in Álora for many generations through his family gave Ramón real depth. He told stories that made the whole area come alive.
★★★★★
Una experiencia de 10 de principio a fin. Da gusto encontrar a gente con verdadera pasión por lo que hace.
Groups, pick-up and booking
★★★★★
We were a big group and Ramón organised extra cars last minute so we could all go together. We were so well looked after.
★★★★★
Very good experience. The guide explained everything clearly — easy to follow even for non-native English speakers.
★★★★★
He translated for the wine maker so we could feel his passion first-hand, and shared a lot about his own family. Very personal. Great day out.
The less-than-perfect ones
We leave these here rather than hiding them: a wall of nothing but five stars tells you less than the real spread does.
★★☆☆☆
Pickups could better planed more time at the winery
The other is a 3-star rating from July 2024, left without a comment — so there is nothing to quote or reply to. Robert had a point about pick-ups, though, so we did something about it: there is now a little in-house tool that walks every traveller to their exact pick-up spot, no squinting at map pins, no "is it the blue door or the other blue door". We road-tested it on our most directionally-challenged relative. It works.
